Wondering why cigarettes are taking a slightly bigger bite out of your wallet this summer? Well, a new 25 cents-a-pack tax in Connecticut just went into effect July 1, said the nonpartisan Tax Foundation.

The increase puts the state's cigarette tax at $3.90 a pack and represents the seventh tax spike in the past 14 years. Connecticut's cigarette tax ranks second only to New York's $4.35-a-pack statewide rate.

Until 2002, the state tax had been 50 cents a pack. But tax increases in 2002, 2003, 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2015 — not to mention the latest hike — have steadily increased the price of Connecticut cigarettes.
