UPDATED: Foxwoods names architect for Biloxi, Miss., casino project

Mashantucket — A prominent Las Vegas architectural firm known for its work in the gaming and hospitality industry is designing the proposed Foxwoods Resort Casino in Biloxi, Miss.

Foxwoods announced Wednesday that it has joined with Friedmutter Group to "design and engineer" Foxwoods Resort Casino at Biloxi Pointe, the $265 million project whose partners also include the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe, which owns Foxwoods, and The Hartmann Group, an Old Saybrook-based consulting firm.

Biloxi Boardwalk Ventures LLC, headed by Louisiana businessman Chris Ferrara, who owns the development site, is the project's developer.

The Mashantuckets are providing financing and the Foxwoods name while The Hartmann Group will manage the facility.

Friedmutter Group, led by Brad Friedmutter, has specialized in regional gaming, hotel and entertainment projects in the United States and China since 1992. It is known for designs that reflect the history of the surrounding communities in which their casinos are built, according to Foxwoods.

"We are particularly enthused to be working with Friedmutter Group of Las Vegas as the architect of record for the (Biloxi) project," Felix Rappaport, Foxwoods' president and chief executive officer, said in a statement. "Not only has Brad Friedmutter and his team worked for the tribe and Foxwoods on many past projects during our nearly 25-year history in the casino gaming industry, but Friedmutter Group has delivered pre-eminent design solutions to clients around the world.

"Brad's involvement will ensure that the Foxwoods brand is fully integrated into the facility design, creating an authentic and compelling hospitality experience that captures the essence and ethos of the Gulf Coast."

Friedmutter Group has worked on several casino projects in the Biloxi area as well as on The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, Studio City Macau in China and Harrah's Resort Atlantic City and others.

"We look forward to partnering once again with the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and Foxwoods Resort Casino as they expand their brand into the Biloxi, Mississippi market," Friedmutter said. "The Mashantucket Pequot Tribe is rich with indigenous culture, and Foxwoods Resort Casino Biloxi Pointe will reflect that among many of the elements that make it a premier resort destination."

The casino, which will be accessible from the metropolitan areas of New Orleans, Birmingham, Ala., and Atlanta, is tentatively scheduled to open in spring 2019.
