Stonington to commemorate VFW park renovations Wednesday

Stonington -- Local officials, veterans and residents will gather at the VFW Memorial Highway Monument at the intersection of Liberty Street and Route 1 in Pawcatuck to commemorate the renovation of the monument and park on Wednesday at 9 a.m.

Erected in 1952, and known locally as the Korean War Monument, the marker celebrates the naming of Route 1 from Hartford to Pawcatuck as the Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Highway.

After falling into disrepair, the upgrades to the park are a joint effort between the Stonington Beautification Committee, Chad Frost of Kent & Frost Landscape Architecture in Mystic which designed the new park and the town’s Public Works Department which did the plantings.

At the brief ceremony, the Board of Selectmen will recognize their work as well as recognize members of the Pawcatuck and Mystic VFW posts, and any Korean War veterans in attendance.
