Sector Long Island Sound gets new commanding officer

Capt. Eva Van Camp assumed command of Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound in a ceremony in New Haven on Wednesday, the U.S. Coast Guard announced in a new release Thursday.

The sector includes 450 miles of coastline along Connecticut and Long Island.

Van Camp is taking over command from Capt. Kevin Reed, who has served as commanding officer of Sector Long Island Sound since 2018 and will now serve at the Coast Guard Pacific Area command in Alameda, Calif., the Coast Guard said.

"It is an incredible mix of mission and people and I am truly humbled to lead this remarkable team," Van Camp, the sector's first female commanding officer, said in the news release.

She previously completed several tours, including work at Coast Guard Headquarters for the Director of Governmental and Public Affairs and for the deputy commandant for operations.
