Groton reminding veterans of property tax exemptions available to them

Groton — The Assessor’s Office would like to remind all town residents that veteran exemptions are available for property taxes. The last filing day for a veteran exemption for the 2020 grand list is Sept. 30.

An original or certified copy of an honorable discharge (DD214) must be recorded with the town clerk’s office. To receive an exemption, the applicant must be a resident of Groton and have served 90 or more cumulative days, except where the war lasted less than 90 days. Disabled veterans that have established their eligibility for exemption are no longer required to file an annual statement from the Veterans Administration unless there is a change in the percentage of disability. Widows also may be entitled to exemptions.

If a married veteran has a total 2019 income of $70,100 or less, or a single veteran has an income of $62,000 or less, they may apply for additional veteran exemptions at the assessor’s office. The last day to file for these benefits is Oct. 1. Proof of income for these programs is required at the time of application.

Anyone who has any questions can contact the assessor’s office at (860) 441-6660 or visit Town Hall, 45 Fort Hill Road, between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, except Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 7.
