Schumacher is CGA Class of 2012's distinguished honor graduate

New London — The U.S. Coast Guard Academy announced that Katie Schumacher is the Class of 2012’s distinguished honor graduate.

The academy will hold its 131st commencement exercises May 16 at 11 a.m. on Cadet Memorial Field at the academy. Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano will speak at the ceremony in which 233 cadets will be commissioned as ensigns.

Schumacher, 21, a first-class cadet, was chosen as the distinguished graduate for her high proficiency in academics, athletics and military bearing.

“She is a true role model for all who follow,” said Capt. John O’Connor, commandant of cadets. “We are proud to have her as our distinguished graduate and look forward to bearing witness to her successes as a commissioned officer.”

Schumacher said she was honored to be recognized.

“It is truly a testament to the amazing officers and faculty and staff here at the academy that I stand where I do today,” she said. “I have been blessed to be able to perform well in academics during the four years at the academy with the additional cross country, swimming, track and regimental positions I took on. God, family and the Class of 2012 have been there for me during the tough, hectic and stressful times.”
