    Rachel Baker commissioned as second lieutenant

    New London — In a ceremony at Fort Griswold Aug. 25, Rachel Baker was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps.

    The commissioning oath was administered by her father, retired Navy Lt. Cmdr. Glenn Baker, of Mystic. Her rank insignia were pinned on by her mother, retired Navy Lt. Cmdr. Susan Baker, also of Mystic, and her great-uncle, retired Army Lt. Col. John Hesterly, of Maryland.

    Baker is a 2008 graduate of Robert E. Fitch Senior High School and a 2012 graduate of The College of the Holy Cross, where she was a midshipman in the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps program. She completed Marine Corps Officer Candidates School in August and will continue her military training at The Basic School at Marine Corps Base Quantico.
