    U.S. Naval Academy recognizes ensign with local ties for leadership, excellence

    Ledyard— Jonathan Simes Poole recently received five awards for leadership and academic excellence during the U.S. Naval Academy’s Commissioning Week Prizes and Awards ceremony.

    Poole is the son of Elizabeth Engelke Poole, of Ledyard, and the grandson of Jane Engelke, of Mystic. Poole graduated from the academy with distinction and received his diploma from President Barack Obama.

    Poole, who was commissioned as an ensign, will study in Ireland for a year as a George Mitchell Scholar before joining the Navy’s surface warfare forces.

    Poole was awarded the Chief of Naval Operations Distinguished Midshipmen Graduates Award, the Class of 1879 Award for superior leadership as a brigade commander, the Frederick W. Wright Jr., ‘31 Award for having the highest class standing out of those who are entering the surface warfare community, the National Society Daughters of Founders and Patriots of America Prize for demonstrating excellence in the knowledge of naval tactics, and the Military Order of Foreign Wars Prize for completing a major in the Mathematics Department and having the highest standing for the entire course of instruction.
