    U.S. Coast Guard Band welcomes new conductor with upcoming concert

    New London — The U.S. Coast Guard Band welcomes a new conductor, Lt. Cmdr. Adam Williamson, in a concert at 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 6, in Leamy Concert Hall at the Coast Guard Academy.

    Williamson conducts a program dedicated to “firsts.” It begins with a world premiere performance of “Ready for the Call,” written by the band’s trombonist and arranger, Musician First Class Sean Nelson.

    The program also includes “Slava!,” a work written to commemorate Mstislav Rostropovich’s first season as music director of the National Symphony Orchestra, “Concerto for Saxophone,” and three short works by songwriter Kurt Weill. It concludes with the band’s first performance of William Bolcom’s 2008 composition, “First Symphony for Band.”
