New London — Soledad O’Brien, a broadcast journalist, executive producer and philanthropist, was this year’s Elenchus Fellow at the Coast Guard Academy. She spoke at the sixth annual Elenchus Fellowship on Wed., Oct. 9.

The Elenchus lecture series was created to give future junior officers the opportunity to reflect on the nature of their obligations to other human beings and how such duties relate to their commissions as Coast Guard officers. Previous fellows include current United Nations Ambassador Samantha Power, The Weekly Standard’s William Kristol and former Congressman Joseph Kennedy.

“It is truly an honor for the Humanities Department and the corps of cadets to host Ms. Soledad O’Brien as the 2013 Elenchus Fellow,” Capt. Glenn Sulmasy, chairman of the Humanities Department, said. “Her commitment to excellent journalism as well as her coverage of the humanitarian aspects of national tragedies, such as Hurricane Katrina, ensures she stands out among reporters and producers. Her talents are well known and we are delighted to have her receive this honor as well address the cadets — truly an incredible opportunity for one of the nation’s military academies.”
