EB to lay off 115 employees

Groton — Electric Boat has notified 115 employees that they will be laid off in January.

The submarine manufacturer informed the state Department of Labor of its plans Friday. According to the company, "changing workforce requirements" led to the staffing reductions.

Under the current plan, the shipfitters, painters and outside machinists, who are members of the Metal Trades Council, will remain employed through Jan. 10.

"These employees work in trades where the projected workload cannot support the existing workforce," Robert H. Nardone, the vice president for human resources and administration at EB, said in a statement Tuesday. "Electric Boat has a responsibility to our customer to align our employment levels with our workload to remain as efficient as possible."
