‘Good Morning America’ expands to three hours as ‘The Chew’ is canceled

Chew on this, daytime TV fans.

ABC’s “Good Morning America” is expanding to three hours, the network announced Wednesday, while “The Chew” is out.

“Good Morning America,” hosted by Robin Roberts, George Stephanopoulos and Michael Strahan, will now air its third hour at 1 p.m.

The network said the all-new time slot will focus on “news, pop culture, compelling interviews and the program’s signature, epic live events,” while a source told Variety it will be pre-taped.

“The Chew” meanwhile, which earned headlines after dropping host Mario Batali in December amid a slew of sexual misconduct accusations, will wrap later this year after seven seasons and more than 1,000 episodes.

ABC said the food-centered talk show will cease production at the end of the current season, but will continue to air through September, including all-new episodes in June.

Host Carla Hall said last week that the series had “no plans” to replace Batali after his firing. She’s the face of “The Chew” alongside Clinton Kelly and Michael Symon.

“While this is the right decision for our business, it is also bittersweet. For seven years ‘The Chew’ has delighted audiences by delivering innovative food segments in an entertaining atmosphere,” Ben Sherwood, co-chairman of Disney Media Networks and president of Disney/ABC Television, said in a statement.

“The Chew” has been nominated for three Daytime Emmy Awards over the years, and won for Outstanding Informative Talk Show Host in 2015.

“Good Morning America” currently airs from 7-9 a.m., opposite NBC’s the “Today” show.

The two chat fests have long gone head-to-head in the ratings battle, though “GMA” has emerged largely victorious, with ABC noting that the series has been the most-watched morning newscast in the country for six years in a row.

“GMA” previously aired a limited-run spin-off in 2012 called “Good Afternoon America” for two-and-a-half months, anchored by Josh Elliott and Lara Spencer.
