    Streaming tip: "Miss Americana," Netflix

    Miss Americana

    Netflix

For Taylor Swift fans, this documentary by director Lana Wilson is a must-see, a peek into aspects of her life that the star had previously kept under wraps. “Miss Americana” might feel carefully curated in some ways, but Swift really does open up. She reveals she had an eating disorder. She explains why, once averse to getting involved in anything political, she decided to come out in support of Democratic candidates in Tennessee. Swift acknowledges that she had long been determinedly focused on doing “the right thing … the good thing” and depended on the validation of others. One of the most quietly devastating moments is when her publicist calls to tell her “reputation” album hasn’t been nominated for any major Grammys. Swift deflates. And then she tearfully vows that, well, she’ll make a better album next time. During the film, you get a real sense of Swift transforming and growing into herself. I do wish “Miss Americana” provided more glimpses into Swift’s songwriting and music-making, which have always been exceptional.
