Amy Helm sings Sunday in Wolf Den

    Amy Helm (Contributed)

I'm not sure who's responsible for those phrases that sum up an entire situation or condition. Take "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree," which we know to suggest that the offspring of a given set of parents will more than likely demonstrate certain genetic characteristics inherent in the bloodline.

Why was "apple" chosen for this? It could have been any hanging fruit, right (as long as said fruit falls victim to gravity at some point)? Why couldn't the cliché have been "The Bengal quince doesn't fall far from the tree"? And what if the tree is on a steep hill? The apple — or Bengal quince — could presumably fall to the ground and then roll for a helluva long way depending on the incline of the hill and how high it is.

Oh, well. However it happens, consider the amazing talents of singer-songwriter Amy Helm, whose dad was Band drummer/vocalist Levon Helm and whose mom is singer Libby Titus. Amy has DNA to burn but plenty of her own individual style and melodic instinct, as well. Give a listen to her fine 2015 "Didn't It Rain" album or, better yet, watch her perform those tunes live when she entertains Sunday in the Mohegan Sun Wolf Den.
