Road trip tip: "The Iceman Cometh"
Road trip tip
The Iceman Cometh
Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre, New York City
For a show that runs nearly four hours and is about a bunch of drunks facing their delusions, the current Broadway production of “The Iceman Cometh” is surprisingly entertaining, dynamic and often quite funny. Chief among the reasons this “Iceman” shines: Denzel Washington. His spirited entrance shows just what star power is; you can feel the energy in the theater change when he bounds onstage. He makes his character’s lengthy monologue near the end of the show a gripping tour-de-force. It’s not a perfect production; the underlying pathos sometimes gets lost, and the female characters are played as shrilly grating caricatures. And this is a Eugene O’Neill play, after all, so things can get repetitious. But “The Iceman Cometh” is absolutely worth a trip to Broadway. For ticket info, visit telecharge.com.
