Hundreds to rally in Rhode Island for immigration reforms

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Hundreds of immigrants and supporters are preparing to rally in Providence as part of a nationwide effort to press Republicans controlling the U.S. House of Representatives to pass immigration reforms.

Spokesman Juan Garcia says Saturday's afternoon rally will begin at Providence Place Mall, followed by a public forum at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church that will feature a symbolic funeral of the Republican party. That reflects frustration with the GOP as House Speaker John Boehner refuses to put a Senate-backed immigration overhaul to a vote.

The Providence rally will demand immigration reforms that include a path to citizenship and an end to deportations. Participants also will call for passage of a state legislation that would allow immigrants living in the country illegally to secure driving licenses.

The event is among more than 150 nationwide calling for immigrant dignity and respect.
