Fundraiser to help cover funeral expenses for New London chef
New London — Family members and friends of the late Atilio Portella, who worked as a chef at Sunrise Cafe, 36 Golden St., will hold a fundraiser this weekend to help send him back to Peru to be buried alongside family members.
Family said Portella was 42 and died last weekend due to complications related to liver problems.
The fundraiser is being held Sunday at 101 Blackhall St., where Olinda Portella and family are pitching in to prepare pollada, a traditional Peruvian chicken dish. The plates are $10 each. Raffles also will be held. Food will be available for takeout.
