    Walter J. Durkin, 84, North Haven, formerly of New Haven

    Walter J. Durkin, 84, of 10 Larson Dr., North Haven, formerly of New Haven, died April 14 at the Hospital of St. Raphael after a brief illness. He was the beloved husband of the late Frances Sanford Durkin. Mr. Durkin was born in New Haven on Dec. 4, 1926, son of the late John Harold and Mary Kelly Durkin. A resident of North Haven for the past 19 years, he had been employed by the City of New Haven, Department of Public Works for 20 years, and then worked for DiChello Distributors of Orange for 12 years, retiring in 1992. Mr. Durkin was a member of the West Haven Elks Club and a retired member of the Teamsters Local 443 of New Haven. He was also a proud U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

    He is survived by his stepdaughter, Carol Heenan and her husband Edward of North Haven; his stepson, William Petrazzulo of New Haven; a sister, Florence Montesi of West Haven; and a brother, Vincent "Red" Durkin of West Haven. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Edward Heenan, Jr., and James and Kara Heenan, all of North Haven, and his canine buddies, Riley and Chance. He was predeceased by a brother, John Durkin.

     His funeral procession will leave Monday, April 18, at 10:30 a.m., from the Torello-Iacobucci Washington Memorial Funeral Home, 4 Washington Ave., North Haven, for a mass of Christian burial, which will be celebrated at 11 a.m. at St. Therese Church, 555 Middletown Ave., North Haven. Burial with military honors will follow in All Saints Cemetery, North Haven. Mr. Durkin's family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, April 18, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m.  Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 825 Brook St., I-91 Tech Center, Rocky Hill, CT 06067.  www.washingtonmemorialfh.com
