    Robert Hunt Slattery, 75, Madison

Robert Hunt Slattery, 75, of Madison, died May 10 after a long and courageous battle with melanoma.  He was the loving husband of Alberta Simon Slattery.  He was born in New Haven on June 25, 1935 son of the late Robert G. and Dorothy Hunt Slattery.  Bob graduated from Notre Dame High School in West Haven and received a BS degree from the University of Connecticut and an MPA degree from the University of Hartford.  In 1999, following 32 years of service at the Connecticut Department of Revenue Services, he retired as the chief fiscal officer.

Throughout his life, Bob was an avid gardener and active volunteer.  During his retirement, he served as a Eucharistic minister and participant in the Visitation Ministry to homebound parishioners of St. Margaret Church in Madison. However, nearest and dearest to his heart was his involvement with Shepherds, Inc, a nondenominational, non-profit organization that opens the door of opportunity to disadvantaged inner city Connecticut youth. As a mentor and sponsor, Bob was able to provide a positive role model and support to several disadvantaged young men before his work with Shepherds was cut short by his illness.

His family thanks the Melanoma Team and nursing staff at the Smilow Cancer Center in New Haven.

Besides his beloved wife, he is survived by his much loved children, Robert Simon Slattery and his wife Margaret of Knoxville, Tennessee; Patrick Joseph Slattery and his wife Beth of Omaha, Nebraska; and Kevin Daniel Slattery and his wife Julie of Largo, Florida.   He was the proud grandfather of Michaela, Patrick, Robert, Devin, and Brooke Slattery.  He is also survived by his brother, Paul Slattery and his wife Rosemary of Hamden, and his sister, Sheilah Slattery of Milford.

A mass of Christian burial will celebrated at St. Margaret Church, 24 Academy St., Madison, on Saturday, May 14, at 10 a.m.  Burial will follow in West Cemetery, Madison. Bob’s family is confident that he would appreciate any contributions made in his memory be directed to Shepherds, Inc., 387 Clinton Ave., Bridgeport, CT 06605 (www.shepherdsinc.com). The Guilford Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.  For more information, or to send an online condolence for the family, please visit www.guilfordfuneralhome.com.
