    Mark N. Johnson, 54, Branford

Mark N. Johnson, 54, of Branford, died peacefully in his beloved hometown on Sept. 22. The son of Patricia Johnson of Branford and the late Gordon E. Johnson Jr., Mark was born in New Haven on Jan. 27, 1957. He and his siblings Kim, Erik and Kerry grew up in a beautiful home on the Branford River. His enduring love and appreciation for Long Island Sound's natural beauty came through in Mark's prolific work as a well-known local artist.

Shortly after graduating with the Branford High School Class of 1975, and while still attending art school (Mitchell College; Paier School of Art), Mark launched his first professional art and framing studio in Branford at the former Bittersweet Farms. Throughout his career, Mark's other unique Branford studio locations included The Cabana in Short Beach, Water's Edge Gallery on Montowese Street, Mark n' Dee's on Main Street, and this summer at Beatty's outdoor market in Indian Neck.

For over 30 years, Mark's original watercolor paintings and many resulting prints have been sought and collected by residents who recognized his gift and considered him "Branford's local artist." From portraits of homes, people and pets to spectacular landscapes, scenes capturing a special moment, or his dynamic studies of objects, animals, birds or flowers, Mark had a special talent for translating what the eye beholds into paintings celebrating the beauty found in a daily sunset, the changing seasons or light playing on local waters.

Through the years, many of Mark's Branford scenes were selected to become cherished Branford Festival prints. Among his many professional accomplishments, Mark was commissioned by the National Fraternal Congress (Knights of Columbus) to create an original painting, "A Celebration of Patriotism," given to President George H.W. Bush during the re-dedication of Ellis Island in 1991. Mark was also a talented musician, singer and songwriter, and he was a loving father to his children.

Besides his mother and his siblings, he is survived by his beloved children, Karen and Max. He was also a loving uncle to his nieces and nephews and was much loved by his extended family and many friends. He was predeceased by his infant son, Ryan.

A memorial service this weekend is planned for family and friends. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his name may be made to the Branford Land Conservation Trust, P.O. Box 254 Branford, CT 06405.
