Alice Bennett Seymour, 92, Haddam, formerly of Yarmouth and Falmouth, Maine

Alice Bennett Seymour, 92, of Haddam, formerly of Yarmouth and Falmouth, Maine, died peacefully after a brief illness at Middlesex Hospital, Middletown, on Dec. 28, surrounded by her family.  She was the widow of Herbert Keeney Seymour. Alice was born on April 11, 1919 in Boston, Massachusetts, daughter of the late Howard W. and Mary (Babcock) Bennett. Growing up in Manchester, Connecticut, she was a 1937 graduate of Manchester High School and earned a degree in zoology from Mount Holyoke College in 1941.  After additional training in Albany, New York, she worked as a medical technologist in Manchester.

Alice married her high school sweetheart, Herbert Keeney Seymour of Buckland, on April 3, 1943, and they enjoyed almost 64 years of happiness together before Herb’s death in 2007.

Alice was a consummate homemaker while their children were growing up, involved in their musical and scouting endeavors, and always there with a hug and a kiss.  Married to an IBM executive, she adapted to moving every three years or so, becoming involved in town associations, health clinics, PTAs, and anywhere else her intelligent enthusiasm could do the most good for the community of the moment.  In 1959, when the family was transferred back to Maine, she was delighted to settle permanently in the wonderful little village of Yarmouth.

Alice was very active with Mt. Holyoke alumni affairs, serving as class scribe for many years and attending class reunions, including her 65th in 2006.

Following Herb’s death, Alice moved to Falmouth House at OceanView in Falmouth, Maine, and then to Connecticut to be nearer to her son Tom.  For the past year-and-a-half, she had resided at The Saybrook at Haddam in Haddam, Connecticut.

Alice was a member of the South Freeport (Maine) Congregational Church.  After moving to Connecticut, she often attended the Deep River Congregational Church, where her son Tom and his wife Debbie played in the bell choir, and where all three of Tom’s children were confirmed, where her granddaughter Kate was married, and where her great-grandson Charlie was baptized.

Shortly before her death, Alice said that one of her biggest delights was that her whole family gets along so well. Thanks to Alice’s example of kindness, honor, and integrity; the belief she instilled in them that they can accomplish anything they set their minds to; and the knowledge she imparted that giving is always better than getting, her family will continue to do so.

Alice is survived by her three children, Leslie Seymour Wears and husband Kenneth of Plain City, Ohio, Cheryl Seymour Roberts and husband Philip of wherever their motor home is parked at any particular time; and Thomas Keeney Seymour and fiancée Brenda Lee Boisvert of Groton.  She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Ty Leland Wears of Scottsdale, Arizona, Grey Seymour Wears of North Hollywood, California, Benjamin Howard Roberts of Lincolnville, Maine, Jillian Alice Roberts of Brighton, Massachusetts, Kathryn Seymour Andres and her husband Hoyt and their son Charles Hoyt Andres of Golden, Colorado, Mathew Tierney Seymour of Deep River, and Colleen Harris Seymour of Chester.  She was also proud to be “mom” to Gertrud (“Gerti”) Lengfelder Sklenar (wife of Vladimir) of the Czech Republic, who, as an AFS exchange student from Vienna, Austria, spent a year with the family, attending North Yarmouth Academy with Leslie and graduating in 1962.  Alice was predeceased by her beloved daughter-in-law, Deborah Harris Seymour, in 2006.

A memorial service will be held on Jan. 12 at 10:30 a.m. at the Deep River Congregational Church in Deep River. Burial will take place in Buckland Cemetery, Manchester, in the summer. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Mount Holyoke College, 50 College St., South Hadley, MA 01075, or to the Shriners Hospital for Children, Office of Development, 2900 Rocky Point Dr., Tampa, FL 33607.
