    Charles R. Monte, 83, Old Saybrook

    Charles R. Monte, 83, of Old Saybrook, died on Aug. 9 at Middlesex Hospital. He was the husband of Patricia (Dee) Monte, whom he married in 1954. Mr. Monte was born on Dec. 29, 1928, son of Charles and Gladys (Stone) Monte. He attended school in Deep River and served in the U.S. Army National Guard at Westbrook.  He was also a veteran of the Korean War, stationed in Japan. 

    Mr. Monte was an active member of Grace Episcopal Church in Old Saybrook for 58 years, serving as vestryman and on many committees. He also served on the Old Saybrook Democratic Town Committee for many years, and served as chairman of the Inland Wetlands Committee and as a member of the Zoning Commission and the Zoning Board of Appeals.  He retired from C.J. Bates Company in Chester in 1996.

    Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, David Monte and his wife Piper of West Jordan, Utah, and a daughter, Lisa DiStasio and her husband Pete of Clinton. He is also survived by five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter, Anthony Joos of Eugene, Oregon, Aaron Joos of Cottonwood Heights, Utah, Alexander Joos and his wife Lacee and their daughter Camree of Herriman, Utah, and Kristen and Nicole DiStasio of Clinton, as well as a brother, James Monte and his wife Rosemary of Port St. Lucie, Florida, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.  He was predeceased by his sister, Sandy Weeks, and by his granddaughter, Amanda Dee Trogden.

    Visitation will take place at the Swan Funeral Home in Old Saybrook on Friday, Aug. 17, from 6 to 8 p.m., with a memorial service at Grace Episcopal Church, Main St., Old Saybrook, on Saturday, Aug. 18, at 11 a.m. Mr. Monte will be buried in the Memorial Garden beside the church he so loved.
