    Donald J. Carney, 83, Madison

Donald J. Carney, 83, of Madison, died peacefully on April 3 at The Connecticut Hospice in Branford.  He was the husband of Isabelle Hernon Carney, whom he married at St Rose of Lima Church in Washington Heights, Manhattan, New York, in October of 1955. Don had been a resident of Madison for the past 11 years and was a parishioner of St. Margaret Church.

Don was born on Dec. 10, 1929 in the Bronx, New York, son of the late William J. and Anna L. Carney. He was raised in the Highbridge section of the Bronx and had been a parishioner of Sacred Heart Church where he also attended elementary school.

Don graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School in The Bronx in 1947. After high school, he graduated from Manhattan College, class of 1951, on an academic scholarship. During his college years, he worked "down the hill" at Yankee Stadium selling concessions.

Don started his career in accounting at Arthur Anderson in Manhattan. His career in finance spanned 40-plus years, until his retirement in 1993 from Grolier Incorporated in Danbury.

Don successfully retired, enjoying the benefits of his lake house with his family on Candlewood Lake. His favorite time of year was autumn. Don loved the foliage, the serenity of the lake, and his beloved Notre Dame Football.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his four children and their spouses, Donna and Paul Tully of Ramsey, New Jersey, Mark Carney of Fairfield, Chris and Jeanne (Kelley) Carney of Sandy Hook, and Greg Carney of Fairfield. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Alison Tully of Summit, New Jersey, Catherine Tully and John Tully of Ramsey, New Jersey, and Kelley Anne, Kevin, Meaghan, and James Carney, all of Sandy Hook. He was predeceased by his older brother William, a private first class in the U.S. Army, who was killed in action at the end of World War II at the age of 19 in 1945, and his younger sister Ann, who died in June of 2011.

A funeral mass was held on Saturday, April 6, at Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Fairfield. Christian burial took place in The Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Westchester County, New York. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made online to "Carney's Fighting Irish" Walk to End Alzheimer's (reference: 2013Walk to End Alzheimer's- Norwalk, CT). The Spear Miller Funeral Home in Fairfield was in charge of arrangements.
