    Phyllis L. Pugliese, 89, North Haven

    Phyllis L. Pugliese, 89, of North Haven, wife of the late Salvatore J. Pugliese, died Oct. 3 at the St. Raphael Campus of Yale-New Haven Hospital. She was born Feb. 14, 1924 in Ware, Massachusetts to the late Lloyd “Bud” and Alice “Mother Al” Metcalf Bombriant.

    She worked as a nurse at the Tahlihina Indian Hospital in Muskogee, Oklahoma, and was one of the first police women in North Haven. She owned Hill Top Nursery School in North Haven, and later owned Needlecraft Boutique.

    She is survived by her son John “Woody” Whalen; her daughter Kathleen Whalen Mickolyzck and her husband Bob; grandchildren Joseph, Rebecca and her husband Alan, Daniel, William, Thomas, Chip and Crystal; great-grandchildren Luke, Levi, Makenzie and Hunter; sisters Shirley Alderman, Betty Walsh, and Sally Mackenzie; and a brother, James Bombriant. She was predeceased by a son, Lloyd “Chipper” Whalen.

    Funeral services were held Oct. 7 in the North Haven Funeral Home and officiated by Rev. Scott Morrow. Interment was in the State Veteran’s Cemetery, Middletown.
