Elizabeth Helen Maher, 92, of Delaware, Ohio, formerly of Guilford, wife of 46 years to the late Walter J. Maher, died Oct. 9 at Willow Brook Christian Villages in Delaware, Ohio. She was born Jan. 7, 1921 in New Haven to John Henry and Helen (Callahan) Fitzmartin.

Betty grew up in New Haven, graduated from Commercial High School, and later worked for Berger Bros. She played forward for the infamous Speed Girls basketball team in the late 1930s, and in December 1942 she married Walter J. Maher. She moved to Guilford, and worked as a policewoman for the Guilford Police Department until her retirement.

She immersed herself in many community activities, from politics in her beloved Democratic party to Girl Scouts. Betty loved to knit and crochet, and tried every craft that ever was. She was one of the best apple pie makers, and won many blue ribbons from the Guilford Fair to attest to it. She was an avid Guilford sports fan and supporter of everything from little league to her favorite sport, Guilford soccer. Betty was also involved in many activities at St. George’s Parish, where she was a long time parishioner.

Betty is survived by her daughters Dawn and her husband Raymond Dolan of Peoria, Arizona and Betsy and her husband Dennis Pienkowski of Bradford, Massachusetts; her sons Joe and his wife Sharon Maher of Guilford, Brian and his wife Roxanne Maher of Niantic, and Kevin and his wife Janine Maher of Lewis Center, Ohio; and a brother, Raymond and his wife Barbara Fitzmartin of Barnegat, New Jersey. She is also survived by her grandchildren Patrick and Colin Dolan, Jason Pienkowski, Benjamin, Tyler and Joey Maher, Bridget Hill, Dawn Cricco, and Travis, Cara, Derek and Kelly Maher; and her great-grandchildren Rachael, Kyle and Grace Hill, Nicholas Cricco, Riley Maher, and Brendan Dolan. Betty was predeceased by a brother, John Fitzmartin; and a sister, Helen Fiorentino.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 10 a.m. in St. George Church, 33 Whitfield St, Guilford, followed by burial in St. George Cemetery, Hubbard Rd., Guilford. Friends may call Monday, Oct. 14 from 5 – 8 p.m. at the Guilford Funeral Home, 115 Church Street, Guilford. Memorial donations in Betty's honor may be made to either M.D.A.
