Joseph Dominic Ambrulevich, 82, Walnut Creek, California, formerly of Branford

Joseph “Joe” Dominic Ambrulevich, 82, formerly of Branford, died Oct. 5 in Walnut Creek, California. He was born March 7, 1931 in Branford, a twin son to the late Frances and John Ambrulevich.

Joe had an impressive record of hard work and significant achievement. His yearbook characterized him as “a wise man is he,” and was a tribute to his “happy smile worth remembering.” After graduation, he served four years in the United States Navy while attending night school to complete coursework necessary to enroll in engineering school. During this time he also worked as the only administrative assistant to Admiral Hyman Rickover, head of the nuclear submarine program for the United States Navy at the time. He was accepted into the engineering program at the University of Connecticut, which led to work as an engineer in Virginia.

Joe met his wife, the love of his life, in 1961 in Washington DC, and in 1963 they moved to California for some of the best years of their lives. Joe worked testing nuclear weapons in the upper atmosphere for more than 30 years at Sandia National Laboratories before retiring in 1994. He enjoyed outdoor adventure, including fishing at Lake Berryessa. He also enjoyed watching the Giants, Forty-Niners, and UConn women’s basketball, investing in the stock market, and spending time with his family. Only half of the “team of two” remain, but Joe’s sweet gentle spirit and big smile will be missed and remembered by all who knew him.

Joe is survived by his wife of more than 50 years, Brenda; children Michael and Jennifer; grandson Joseph; and dog Kona. He is also survived by his twin brother John and his wife Almeda and their daughter Marion Martone.

A funeral mass and reception were held Oct. 17 at St. John Vianney Church, Walnut Creek, California. Hull’s Walnut Creek Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
