    Joseph E. Bergmann, 90, Branford

    Joseph E. Bergmann, 90, of Branford, died Feb. 8 at the Hospital of St. Raphael after a brief illness. Joe was born June 19, 1923 in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, a son of the late Emil and Molly Murphy Bergmann.

    He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy. Joe worked as an insurance claims adjuster and a marine surveyor for G.A.B. for many years. He also drove for Hy’s Livery Company.

    Joe summered in Block Island, and was an avid boater. He belonged to the Branford Yacht Club and was a member of the Elks Club. He was a communicant of St. Mary Church in Branford. 

    Joe is survived by his children Jay Bergmann of Clearwater, Florida, Kerry Bergmann of Fort Mill, South Carolina, Robert (Deborah) Orris of Colchester, Dr. Richard (Nancy) Orris of Tolland, and Cathy (Leroy) Smith of Branford; his grandchildren Austin and Hayley Smith, and Andrew and Stephanie Orris; and his longtime companion Barbara Friess Dwyer of Branford. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Joe was predeceased by his wives Anne Bergmann and Jane Orris Bergmann; his sister Mary Johnston; and his brother George Bergmann.

    His funeral will leave from the W.S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home, 244 North Main St., Branford, Thursday, Feb. 13 at 9:30 a.m. for a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Church. Burial will follow in Center Cemetery, Branford.
