    NCAA women's basketball roundup

Mississippi's Bianca Thomas, bottom, looks to pass as Ashley Houts of Georgia defends in the first half of Sunday's game at Athens, Ga. Thomas hit a 3-pointer with five seconds left in the game to give Mississippi a 66-65 win.

    No. 4 Notre Dame 74, No. 16 W. Virginia 66

West Virginia could contain Notre Dame and Lindsay Schrader only for a half.

After being held without a shot in the first half, Schrader went 6 for 8 from the floor in the second half and scored eight of her 16 points during a decisive run as the Fighting Irish rallied for a victory Sunday.

"In the second half, Schrader just took over," West Virginia coach Mike Carey said. "She got physical with us. Every time we got physical we got a foul called. She took over. I think she was the key."

Notre Dame coach Muffet McGraw said the Irish usually turn to Schrader when they need a key basket.

"Everybody on our team knows when we're not scoring we're going to try to find Lindsay," McGraw said. "Not to the exclusion of anybody else, but that's going to be a look we want because she has so many mismatches. They had guards trying to guard her down there and we needed to take advantage of that."

The Irish trailed 44-31 after Madina Ali scored the opening basket of the second half, and trailed 49-39 when Vanessa House hit a 3 for the Mountaineers (18-2, 5-1 Big East). But the Irish responded with a 16-3 run led by Schrader, who repeatedly scored baskets inside. Natalie Novosel capped it with a baseline runner that gave the Irish a 55-52 lead.

The Irish put the game away with a 10-1 burst late to take a 74-63 lead.

Duke (17-3, 5-0) frittered away an 11-point lead and trailed 54-53 before Mitchell hit a runner in the lane as the shot clock expired.

After a missed shot by Maryland, Duke's Joy Cheek made two three throws with 20 seconds remaining for a three-point cushion. Anjale Barrett then missed a 3-pointer for the Terrapins, and Thomas made one of two free throws before Barrett connected on a 3 at the buzzer.

It was 65-63 when Thomas hit the go-ahead 3 with 5.1 seconds remaining, and Georgia's Jasmine James missed a desperation 3-pointer as time expired. Thomas was just 2 of 12 from the field until the final 3. She finished with 10 points.

Taylor made the first free throw but had to miss the second intentionally, and the Yellow Jackets (16-5, 2-3) could not gather in the loose ball.
