    Top 25 college basketball roundup

Rutgers' Syessence Davis goes up to take a shot past South Florida's Alisia Jenkins during the second half of Monday's game in Piscataway, N.J. South Florida won 60-51.

    Men

No. 14 North Carolina 63, Notre Dame 61

James Michael McAdoo hit the go-ahead shot in the lane with 3:09 left and Marcus Paige blocked Eric Atkins' driving shot on the final play to seal North Carolina's victory over Notre Dame on Monday night.

McAdoo finished with 14 points to lead the Tar Heels (23-7, 13-4 Atlantic Coast Conference), who blew a 14-point halftime lead and had to fight to the horn for their 12th straight win in their home finale. It is UNC's longest winning streak since 2008-09.

It marked the second straight close win for the Tar Heels against a team in the lower third of the ACC standings, following Saturday's 60-56 win at Virginia Tech. Still, they haven't lost since Jan. 20 heading into Saturday's finale at No. 4 Duke.

Atkins scored 21 points for Notre Dame (15-16, 6-12), which used a 22-5 run out of halftime to make a game of it.

McAdoo's basket started a 6-0 burst that gave UNC a 61-56 lead with 90 seconds left, but Pat Connaughton's three-point play cut the deficit back to two. Then, after Atkins' driving layup with 8.6 seconds left, Paige — shooting 89 percent from the free throw line on the season — made just 1 of 2 with 6.6 seconds left to give Notre Dame one more shot to tie or win.

Atkins drove into the paint against McAdoo and Paige, but Paige knocked the ball away and the horn sounded to end it.

Notre Dame, playing without senior center Garrick Sherman due to a hand injury, closed its regular season with two straight tough losses. The Fighting Irish lost 85-81 at home to Pittsburgh on Saturday and won't play again until next week's ACC tournament in Greensboro.

Connaughton had Notre Dame's first 10 points of the second half and finished 17 points and a season-high 13 rebounds.

Notre Dame led 56-55 with about 4 minutes left before Paige found a trailing McAdoo for the go-ahead basket. Then, after a turnover from Atkins, Brice Johnson scored inside to push the lead to three and fellow sophomore J.P. Tokoto hit a jumper to beat the shot clock for the 61-56 lead with 1:28 to play.

Tokoto finished with 11 points for UNC, which managed nine points through the first 14 minutes of the second half. Paige finished with just seven points on 2-for-8 shooting.

    Women

    Texas 65, No. 18 Oklahoma St 58

Imani McGee-Stafford scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead Texas to a win over Oklahoma State.

Texas (20-10, 11-7 Big 12) took the lead early in the first half with a 3-pointer from Nekia Jones that made it 11-8 and the Longhorns never trailed again, carrying a 30-21 advantage into the break and holding off the Cowgirls in the second half.

Chassidy Fussell contributed 13 points for Texas, who controlled the boards 42-30 and sank 25 of their 36 free throw attempts — a 3-to-1 scoring advantage from the penalty stripe— to avenge a Jan. 2 loss to Oklahoma State. The win moved Texas into a third-place tie with the Cowgirls, the Longhorns' best conference finish since the 2004-05 season.

Oklahoma State (22-7, 11-7) was led by Kendra Suttles, who scored 14 points, while Tiffany Bias had 13 and Liz Donohoe 10.

    South Florida 60, No. 24 Rutgers 51

Courtney Williams scored 26 points and grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds, leading South Florida to a win over Rutgers, taking over sole possession of third place in the American Athletic Conference.

After Betnijah Laney's jumper with 4:08 left in the first half pulled Rutgers within four, South Florida (18-11, 13-5) used a 15-3 run that bridged the two halves to open up a 40-24 lead with 16 minutes left.

Rutgers (21-8, 12-6) made just 9 of 26 field goals and committed nine turnovers in the first half.

The Scarlet Knights used a 14-4 run to pull within three with 1:27 remaining, but Williams hit a 3-pointer 30 seconds later to make it 57-51 before Rutgers missed its final four shots of the game.

Syessence Davis led Rutgers with 12 points. Kahleah Copper, who came in averaging a team-high 16.1 points, scored seven on 2-of-11 shooting.
