    Shulick goes distance; Avery Pt. baseball routs Manchester

    Groton - Brett Shulick scattered seven hits in a complete-game performance Sunday, pitching the UConn-Avery Point baseball team to an 11-3 win over Manchester Community College.

    Shulick (4-1) struck out seven and walked one. Chris Ayer and former St. Bernard standout Mike Aldrich each had three hits for Avery Point, with Aldrich doubling twice, scoring twice and driving in two runs. Kyle Cummings, (three RBI), Chris Davidson and Jake Matuszak each had two hits for Avery Point (25-7). Ryan Carroll took the loss for Manchester (19-13-1).

    In other games:

    â–  St. John's scored 11 runs in the first three innings and went on to beat UConn 13-4 in a Big East Conference game in Storrs. The Huskies fall to 22-20 and 8-10 in the league.

    College softball

    â–  UConn swept a Big East doubleheader from Villanova. UConn (28-18, 10-11) won the opener 3-2 and the second game 13-3. Julianne Towers (second game) and Micah Truax (first game) homered for UConn.

    â–  Mitchell College qualified for the New England Collegiate Conference tournament, earning the No. 3 seed. The Mariners (13-16-1, 10-5-1) host No. 6 Wheelock Tuesday at 4 p.m.

    College men's tennis

    â–  Former Norwich Free Academy standout Kyle Carmona won his singles and doubles matches, leading Mitchell College to a 7-2 victory over Lesley University. Chris White and Westerly's Andrew Small also won their matches for Mitchell (9-0).

    Auto racing

    â–  Ted Christopher survived a cut tire and an accident en route to his second straight win at Stafford Motor Speedway. Christopher won the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tech-Net Sprin Sizzler. Lisbon's Chris Pasteryak finished fifth, Lisbon's Carl Pasteryak was 23rd and Norwich's Tom Abele Jr. was 31st. In Stafford's regular program, Waterford's Dillon Moltz won the 30-lap late model race, Uncasville's Scott Cook was second and Salem's Corey Hutchings was 12th. Richie Pallai Jr. won the 40-lap SK Modifieds race.

    â–  Uncasville's Matt Kobyluck finished 10th Saturday night in the NASCAR Camping World Series East Tri-County 150 at Hudson, N.C. Kobyluck, who is in sixth place on the tour with 281 points, earned $2,400.

    H.S. softball

    â–  Julia Bondy pitched a six-hitter Saturday, leading Williams School to a 14-4 win over Greens Farms Academy. Bondy (2-2) struck out 13 with two walks and she also singled three times. Megan Bondy singled, doubled and tripled, and Brooke Watson had two hits for Williams (2-2). Alexa Sullivan homered for Greens Farms (1-4).

    H.S. boys' tennis

    â–  After losing the first three singles matches, Fitch rallied to beat Waterford 4-3 Saturday morning. Diego Aguilar and Mark Jens won singles matches and the doubles teams of Alex Bonnassieux-Phil deLabry and Deep Kanagala-Dave Hooper also won for Fitch (3-1). Rocco Devona, Alex Anisimov and Joel Simonson won for Waterford (4-1).

    H.S. boys' lacrosse

    â–  Jeff Pearce scored three goals Saturday to help lead Stonington to a 12-5 win over Woodstock Academy. Luke Lebras scored twice and Alex Gosselin had three assists for Stonington (4-1).

    H.S. track

    â–  Due to computer problems at the site, two winning teams at the Ledyard Relays were incorrectly listed. Ledyard's winning 4x100 boys' team was Abe Julue, Sam Saccomano, Fred Hewett and Micah Johnston. Ledyard's winning 4x100 weight relay team was Jamie Burton, Amber Calderon, Audrey Higgins and Shayne Biggs.
