    Jogger Joe

    Groton — John Trahan won the first Jogger Joe fun run of the season last Friday, covering the 3-mile road race around Groton Long Point in a time of 18 minutes, 37 seconds.

    The informal series of road races have been taking place every Friday in May and June for more than 35 years.

    Runners meet at 6 p.m. at the Esker Point Beach parking lot on Groton Long Point Road in Noank for a 1.5-mile warm-up, followed by a 3-mile, self-timed race about 6:20. The flat, fast course begins and ends at the parking lot.

    Though the races are informal, with no entry fees or registration, past competitors have included Boston Marathon winners, Olympians and world-class runners as well as casual joggers.

    GYMNASTICS

    Shoreline Gymnastics

    Katie Frese of Essex, a gymnast from Shoreline Gymnastics in Old Saybrook, won the balance beam with a score of 9.2 at the National Junior Olympic competition May 1 in West Virginia.

    Frese was second all-around with 36.0.

    She advanced by competing at the USAG States at Pomperaug High School, placing first on vault and second all-around, and at the regionals in Danvers, Mass., coming in first on vault and third all-around.
