Colorado Springs, Colo. - UConn sophomore Shabazz Napier has been selected to try out for the 2011 USA Basketball Men's World University Games team.

Napier, a point guard from Randolph, Mass., will be one of 21 players competing for a spot on the 12-man roster. Last season he helped the Huskies win a national championship, averaging 7.8 points, 3.0 assists and 1.6 steals while making the All-Big East rookie team.

UConn teammate Alex Oriakhi had previously been chosen to participate in tryouts but decided to withdraw. An ESPN report indicated that Oriakhi was injured, but that's not the case, according to UConn basketball team spokesman Kyle Muncy.

Training camp opens today and runs through Aug. 7 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. The official roster will be announced on Aug. 8. The World University Games are Aug. 13-22 in Shenzhen, China.

Connecticut Tigers

• Travis Taijeron's home run with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted Brooklyn past Connecticut 2-1 in New York-Penn League action at MCU Park.

Reliever Fernando Celis (0-3) took the loss for the Tigers (17-21).

Connecticut opened the scoring with a run in the third inning on Eugenio Suarez's first home run of the season.

Brooklyn's Richard Lucas had a solo home run in the fourth to tie the game. The Cyclones are 22-17.

Connecticut starter Wilsen Palacios pitched well in the loss, allowing three hits in 5 2/3 innings.

SEC Babe Ruth 16-18

• New London beat Tri County I 7-2 in a losers' bracket game behind the pitching of Andre Foster who went the distance, allowing three hits. Dakwan Alger had two hits and scored a run while Ivan Abreu had three hits and two RBI for New London. For Tri-County I, Aaron Tierney had two hits and scored a run and Tom Cassello added an RBI.

New London faces Groton in the losers' bracket final at 7 tonight at Sal Amanti Field.

• Bryan Grandieri had three hits and an RBI, powering Waterford past Groton 11-8 in the winners' bracket. Trent Brennan had three hits and Nate Waters added two hits and an RBI for Waterford. Hunter Brochu had two hits and two RBI and Jesse Swink had two hits and an RBI for Groton.

Waterford advanced to the championship round, playing the winner of Groton-New London at 5 p.m. Saturday at Washington Park.

Gene Sutera tournament

• Pawcatuck beat East Lyme 15-8 in the 9-10 division. Jack Cullum and Ethan Murphy each had four hits and R.J. Parrilla, Kevin Farrar and Nate Miller had two hits apiece for Pawcatuck. Matt Malcolm had two doubles for East Lyme.

• Waterford North advanced to the 11-12 division finals with a 12-8 win over East Lyme. Jordan Hancock earned the win and added two doubles while Kobe Haley had two hits, including a home run for Waterford North. Kyle MacDonnel had a grand slam and J.T. Mullins also homered for East Lyme.

In Wednesday's action, pitcher Dan Castelpoggi had six strikeouts and added a single and home run, as Waterford North beat Lyme-Old Lyme 5-2. Collin Bakken had two hits and Chase Hackett had three hits, including a home run for Lyme-Old Lyme.

Local golf

• Norwich Golf Course pro John Paesani shot a 3-over 74 in the first round of the 32nd U.S. Senior Open at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.

Paesani recovered from a bumpy start that included three bogeys on the front nine, giving him a 40 at the turn. He recorded two birdies, both on the back nine.

Heading into today's second round, Paesani is tied for 73rd. Olin Browne has a one shot lead after shooting a 7-under 64.
