    Local roundup: Fairfield-Sonn leads Valley/OL football to victory

    Deep River - Jimmy Fairfield-Sonn threw for four touchdowns and ran for two more scores, leading the Valley Regional/Old Lyme football team to a 41-12 win over East Hampton Friday night in a Pequot Conference Sassacus Division game.

    The Warriors (9-0, 9-0) secured a home game in the CIAC Class S quarterfinals with the victory. Fairfield-Sonn was 8-for-13 passing for 192 yards and rushed seven times for 72 yards.

    Chris Jean-Pierre had touchdowns receptions of 38, 65 and 11 yards, Jean-Luc Poulard caught a 23-yard touchdown pass and Jordan Saintil had 74 yards rushing on five carries for Valley.

    Men's basketball

    • Greg Marshall scored 28 points and David Anderson added 22 (both career highs) as Coast Guard Academy beat Haverford 73-71 in overtime at the Equinox Classic in Swarthmroe, Pa. Anderson, a freshman, also had 10 rebounds for the Bears (1-1), who scored the first eight points in overtime. Kevin Sowers added eight points and eight assists for CGA.

    • Jan Rogowski scored 18 points to lead St. Joseph's College from Brooklyn to a 63-56 win over Mitchell College in a nonleague game. Michael Pellegrini led Mitchell (1-1) with 17 points and 17 rebounds, Paul Jefferson scored 14 and Trace Lanson had 10 points.

    • St. Thomas More beat Fishburne Military Academy of Virginia 83-56 at the National Prep Showcase at Albertus Magnus in Hamden. Rodney Sanders scored 13 points, Barrington Stevens had 12 points, A.J. English scored 10 and Ky Howard had 13 rebounds for T-More (2-0).

    Women's basketball

    • Albright College jumped out to a 38-12 halftime lead and went on to beat Mitchell College 72-41 in the Saint Joseph Tip Off tournament in West Hartford. Sheanna James had 12 points and 11 rebounds for Mitchell (0-2).

    H.S. swimming

    • Fitch's Lindsey Nolan played fifth and East Lyme's Caroline Gonsalves sixth in the State Open diving final at Hamden. Nolan finished with 400.10 points and Gonsalves had 395.30. Wilton's Katie Warburg won the title with 454.90 while East Lyme's Hanna Suarez placed 20th with 321.00.

    Turkey Day tickets

    • Tickets for the Thanksgiving Day football game between Ledyard and Fitch will go on sale Monday at both schools. Tickets can be purchased at in the main office at Ledyard on Monday and Tuesday from 7 a.m.-2 p.m., and Wednesday from 7 a.m.-noon. Tickets can be purchased in the auditorium ticket booth at Fitch on Monday and Tuesday from 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. and Wednesday from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Tickets purchased in advance are $5 for adults and $2 for students. All tickets on game day will be $5.

    Men's hockey

    • Wesleyan scored three goals in each of the first two periods and beat Connecticut College 6-1 in the season opener for both teams. Marc Roper scored for Conn with Sean Curran and J.J. McGregor getting assists.

    Women's hockey

    • Trinity goalie Alexa Pujol made 40 saves in a 3-1 victory over Conn College in the season opener. Courtney Dumont scored for the Camels.

    H.S. soccer

    • Montville's Class M semifinal game against Granby Memorial at Middletown High School today will start at 5:30 p.m. instead of 4:30, as originally announced. The fourth-seeded Indians, which shared the state title a year ago with Bethel, defeated No. 5 Nonnewaug 5-2 in overtime in the quarterfinals. Granby, the No. 17 seed, eliminated No. 9 Holy Cross 4-2 in the quarters.

    College field hockey

    • Top-ranked North Carolina rallied from a 3-0 halftime deficit to defeat UConn, 4-3 in double overtime, in the semifinals of the NCAA Division I tournament. The Tar Heels (22-1) scored two goals in the final minute of regulation to tie the game and got the game-winner from Kelsey Kolojejchick in the second overtime. Marie Elene Bolles scored twice for the Huskies.

    Men's swimming

    • Marcio Tinari, Derrian Duryea and Jeff Mistrick won three events apiece as Coast Guard defeated Providence College 165-109. Tinari won the 1,000 freestyle (10:03.92) and the 500 freestyle (4:52.94), Duryea the 100 breaststroke (1:01.08) and 200 breaststroke (2:14.87) and Mistrick the 1-meter diving (200.9 points) and 3-meter (242.0). The Bears are 3-1.

    Women's swimming

    • Coast Guard picked up individual wins from Heidi Gayman (100 freestyle, 54.09), Chantel Ferguson (200 IM, 2:19.02) and Sara Cantrell (3-meter diving, 208 points) in a 173-116 loss to Providence. The Bears are 1-3.

    Men's soccer

    • Coast Guard senior Brett Godiksen has been selected to play in the New England Division III All-Star game on Nov. 27 at Harvard.
