Local roundup: Buccaneers coach Sullivan to speak at CGA football banquet

New London - Mike Sullivan, offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, will be the guest speaker at the Coast Guard Academy football banquet Feb. 1 at the Coast Guard Academy Alumni Center.

Sullivan just completed his first season as offensive coordinator with the Bucs after a successful eight-season stretch as assistant coach with the New York Giants, including teams which won Super Bowl XLII and Super Bowl XLVI.

For two seasons (2010-11), Sullivan was responsible for coaching the Giants quarterbacks, including Eli Manning. Under Sullivan's tutelage, Manning achieved two of the best seasons in the league during that time, culminating in Super Bowl MVP honors. In 2011, Manning set a single-season franchise record in completions (359) and passing yards (4,933), which also ranked as the sixth-highest mark in NFL history. He set the NFL record for most fourth-quarter touchdown passes in a season with 15.

"We are honored and we have the rare opportunity to have coach Sullivan, a two-time Super Bowl champion coach as well as a graduate of West Point, come and address our football team," Coast Guard coach Bill George said in a press release.

Coast Guard finished the 2012 season with a 5-4 record, posting a winning season for the first time since 2007. This season, the Bears set or tied 17 school records including 2,694 passing yards, 3,661 yards of total offense and 24 touchdown passes. Senior quarterback Jon Resch set four season records (most passing yards, most passes attempted, most passes completed and most yards of total offense) and a pair of career records with most passing yards and most yards of total offense.
