Indianapolis - Sam Gill of Connecticut College finished second in the men's 100-yard butterfly Thursday at the NCAA Division III Championship.

Gill's time of 47.92 was .01 seconds behind winner Karl Mering of Whitman. Conn's Sam Pierce was ninth in the women's 200 freestyle with a time of 1:51.47.

Conn is 11th in the men's meet with 71 points and 15th in women's with 37.

Conn's Patrick McGinnis, Michael Fothergill, Drew Andre' and Gill were sixth in the men's 200 freestyle relay (1:21.45) and Ivy Durepo, Skye Qi Marigold, Julia Pielock and Pierce were eighth in the women's 200 freestyle relay (1:34.56). Also, Conn's Gill, Kirk Czelewicz, Loring Bowen and Andre' were 10th in the men's 400 medley relay (3:18.36).

All the finishes were good enough to earn All-America status.

H.S. girls' basketball

• Seven players from the Eastern Connecticut Conference will play in the Connecticut High School Coaches Association Girls All-Star Festival on Monday, March 24 at North Branford High School.

Seniors from schools in Class M and Class S will play at 6 p.m., with seniors from Class LL and Class L playing at 7:30 p.m. The games will feature East teams vs. West teams and all ECC players are on the East teams.

Selected to play in the first game are Cassidy Bundy of Montville, Casey Sullivan of St. Bernard and Kirsten Drobiak of Griswold. St. Bernard's Mike Nystrom will be one of the coaches for the East.

Selected for the second game are Olivia DelGrosso and Hannah Hutchins of Ledyard, Jenna Schumacher of East Lyme and Alyssa Velles of Norwich Free Academy.

Admission is $6 with one dollar being donated to the Wounded Warriors Project

CIAC championship presale

• Fans are encouraged to purchase their tickets in advance for this weekend's CIAC boys and girls' basketball championships at Mohegan Sun Arena.

Sessions 3, Sunday: Class M girls', No. 5 New London vs. No. 6 Morgan, 12:30 p.m.; Class S boys', No. 3 Sacred Heart vs. No. 8 Valley Regional, 3 p.m.; and, Class L boys', No. 2 Career vs. No. 4 Windsor, 5:30 p.m.

H.S. swimming

• Mitchell Ryan of East Lyme finished 19th in the 1-meter diving at the CIAC State Open in Middletown. Ryan, a junior, scored 333.85. Tianyi Zeng of Hand won with 539.50.

College softball

• Chelsea Boulrisse's walk-off single scored Caitlin Downes with one out in the eighth inning and gave Roger Williams its 5-4 win in the first game of its doubleheader sweep over Coast Guard.

Cherokee Strickland went 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run for the Bears (6-6) and Pawcatuck's Kelly Grills added two hits, including a double, and scored.

Taylor Messier went 3-for-4, including a double, with two RBI and a run to lead the Hawks to a 4-3 win in the nightcap. Jessie Richardson had two hits, a run and an RBI for Coast Guard and Erin Reynolds had two doubles and two RBI.

• Alyssa Hancock of Waterford drove in seven runs as Eastern Connecticut State wrapped up its Florida trip with 5-2 wins over Western New England and Hamilton. Hancock leads the Warriors (4-8) with a .407 average and 20 total bases. The sophomore had a pair of two-out, two-run doubles against Hamilton and had a single and three-run homer against WNEC. Waterford's Erin Miller was the winning pitcher against WNEC and Mattie Brett of Waterford tripled in that game. Former Wheeler standout Summer Cipriani, a freshman, earned a win in relief Wednesday for Eastern.

College baseball

• Former Fitch standout Greg Porter was the winning pitcher as Eastern Connecticut State beat Trinity 3-1 at Auburndale, Fla. Porter (2-1) allowed three hits over seven innings and struck out 10.

• Tyler Shamas of Mitchell was named the ECAC Division III New England co-pitcher of the week. Shamas, a sophomore, was 2-0 with a 1.93 earned run average with a pair of complete games. Over 14 innings he struck out 20 batters. He shared the award with Anthony Berroa of Eastern Nazarene.

Women's lacrosse

• Mitchell College has hired Tom Hinsch as associate head coach for its women's lacrosse program. The Mariners, making their debut this season as a varsity program, play their first game today at home against Bay Path College at 3:30 p.m. Hinsch will assist head coach John Keysor.

Women's water polo

• Connecticut College dropped a pair of games in California, losing to host University of Redlands 10-7 and Washington & Jefferson 4-3. Nicky Jasbon and Abbey Wrobleski had three goals each for Conn (4-3).

Kate Jacobson of Conn was named the Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III Player of the Week last week. Jacobson, a junior co-captain, scored 15 goals with eight assists and six steals as the Camels.
