Tigers top Lake Monsters 7-0, claim third straight series

Starting pitcher Trey Teakell allowed just two hits over five innings, none after the second, and retired the last 12 hitters he faced as the Connecticut Tigers defeated the Vermont Lake Monsters 7-0 in a New York-Penn League game Monday to claim their third straight series.

Nate Fury and Jake Shull each worked two innings to close the game for the Tigers (9-8). Vermont (6-11) never moved a runner past second base.

The Tigers started the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Victor Padron led off with a single and Brett Pirtle reached on a fielder’s choice. With runners on second and third and one out, Josh Lester drove in the first run with an RBI groundout. Will Allen followed with an RBI double and Joey Havrilak (2-for-3) completed the scoring with an RBI single to make it 3-0.

Connecticut added to its run total in the third when Pirtle (2-for-4) launched his first home run of the season, making it 5-0. The Tigers added two in the seventh.

Connecticut is off today before heading to State College, Pa., to start a three-game series Wednesday.
