    Local roundup: Waterford volleyball team beats NFA 3-1

    Waterford — Vanessa Kobyluck had 42 assists and Jill Sykora added 23 digs, leading Waterford High School to a 3-1 volleyball victory over Norwich Free Academy on Friday.

    Game scores were 25-17, 23-25, 31-29, 25-19.

    Avery Kosma had seven aces and Mickayla Shelburne had 17 kills for the Lancers (3-1). Cebria Outlow had 18 kills and three blocks while Kayley Ericson had 36 assists and Mackenzie Burke had 16 service points and 14 digs for NFA (2-2).

    In other games:

    • Fitch swept Ledyard 25-11, 25-6 and 25-21 beind Mae Sefransky's 19 assists and Jen Severino's 10 kills. Paige Turner added eight service points for the unbeaten Falcons (5-0). Jenna Boyd had eight assists and Chloe Hespeler added six kills for Ledyard (0-4).

    • Sophia Romeo had eight digs and four kills while Marissa Smith added nine assists in Old Lyme's 3-0 loss to Hale-Ray in the Shoreline Conference. Game scores were 25-15, 27-25 and 25-21. The Wildcats fell to 1-2, 0-2.

    • Saige Laquitara had 18 service points and nine aces in Norwich Tech's 3-2 win over Ellis Tech in the Constitution State Conference East Division. Game scores were 25-18, 25-15, 17-25, 17-25 and 15-10. Madison Bodley added nine kills and nine digs and Anna Hammar had eight kills and five blocks for the Warriors (2-2, 1-0).

    H.S. swimming

    • Mary Katherine Taylor won a pair of events as East Lyme won a tri-meet, defeating NFA 120-41 in the ECC and Old Lyme 110-28. NFA also beat Old Lyme 84-46. Taylor won the 50-yard freestyle (28.15) and 100 butterfly (1:10.25). Carlie Biondi, Gretchen Stelter, Jasmine Bazinet, Kate Orefice, Alexis Dumais and Anneliese Lapides also won events and Victoria Chen, Madi Lillie, Taylor Gray, Abigail Bessire and Amelia Kozlowski were on winning relay teams for the Vikings (3-0, 2-0).

    Lily Cox of Old Lyme won the 500 freestyle and the NFA (1-2, 0-2) team of Ciara McDonough, Genevieve Buckridge, Jenilee Antonetty and Katie Hatfield-Spendolini won the 400 freestyle relay.

    • Megan Pipech finished first in the 200-yard freestyle (2:20.53) and Maddie Johanson won the 100 breaststroke (1:16.78) and 200 IM (2:29.03), leading Ledyard past Waterford 96-74 in the ECC. Olivia Strelevitz was first in the 100 butterfly (1:04.75) for the Colonels (1-1, 1-1). Meika Gathy placed first in the 100 backstroke (1:04.09) and 100 freestyle (58.67) and Tori Zane won the 50 freestyle (28.53) for the Lancers (1-2, 1-1).

    H.S. football

    • Quarterback Chuck Kostek went 18-for-27 for 290 yards and four touchdowns, powering Morgan past Valley/Old Lyme 40-0 in the Pequot Football Conference South. Valley (0-2, 0-2) trailed 13-0 at halftime and committed three turnovers overall. Quarterback Matt Sapere was Valley's leading rusher, carrying the ball 14 times for 95 yards.

    College volleyball

    • Caroline Martin had a team-high 12 kills in Connecticut College's 3-0 loss to unbeaten Amherst College in the New England Small College Athletic Conference opener for both teams. Game scores were 25-17, 25-23 and 25-14. The Camels dropped to 4-2 overall.
