    Local roundup: Fitch's Kosman finishes fifth in New England wrestling tourney

    Providence — Fitch High School's Jarod Kosman completed his sophomore season by earning a medal at the New England Championship wrestling tournament on Saturday.

    Kosman, wrestling at 106 pounds, placed fifth, defeating Jack Darling of Masconomet (Mass.) 2-1 in overtime in the 5th-6th consolation final. He was the only local wrestler to earn a medal. He began the day by losing in the quarterfinals, but bounced back to beat Ryan Garlitz of St. John's Prep (Mass.) 10-2 in the consolation quarters before losing to E.O. Smith's Rob Hartling in the consolation semifinals, 2-1, in a rematch of last week's State Open final.

    Montville's Joel Morth (132) lost both of his matches on Saturday while Ledyard's Danny Contino (195) lost his only match in an elimination bout.

    Bishop Hendricken (R.I.) won the team title with 89 points, but otherwise Connecticut teams and wrestlers performed well by having the next five finishers in the team standings and having eight of the 14 individual New England champions.

    Newtown was the runnerup with 60.5 points followed by State Open champ New Fairfield (58.5), Danbury (57), New Milford (54.5) and Fairfield Warde (53). The individual champions were Ellis Tech's JoJo Gonzalez (126), Warde's Timmy Kane (132), Danbury's Jeremy Fields (138), Warde's Charles Kane (145), Nonnewaug's Kieran Duggan (152), New Milford's Brett Leonard (160), Newtown's Anthony Falbo (182) and Notre Dame of Fairfield's Hakeem Fleming (285).

    In addition to Kosman, Killingly's Austin Caffrey (182) and Josh Angel (285) and Lyman Memorial/Windham Tech's Mitchell LaFlam (182) were the other Eastern Connecticut Conference place-winners. Caffrey lost to Falbo 3-2 in a rematch of the State Open final, Angel finished fourth and LaFlam was fifth.

    H.S. gymnastics

    • Norwich Free Academy's Taylor Churchill placed fifth in the uneven bars during the State Open championship meet at New Milford. Churchill scored a 9.175 on the event. Among the other local competitors, Morgan Staehle of the East Lyme/Waterford/Montville cooperative program placed 14th on vault (8.725) and 16th on uneven bars (8.275) while Stonington's Catherine Cassata finished 18th on vault (8.575) and Old Lyme's Britney Detuzzi was 20th on vault (8.5).

    Woodstock Academy successfully defended its State Open team title with 147.30, easily defending Greenwich (140.4), and the Centaurs' Paige Stuyniski won the all-around title with 38.425 points.

    Local road racing

    • Ledyard's Jeff Wadecki and former Stonington resident Laura Brustolon set course records in winning the men's and women's divisions of the Kelley's Pace Hare Hop 5K road race in Mystic. Wadecki was the overall winner in 16:45 while Brustolon, who now resides in Littleton (Mass.) finished 14th overall and won the women's race in a course record 20:04. Jonathan Hammett of Charleston, R.I., was second overall in 17:26 while Westerly's Matt Walker was third (17;33), Gales Ferry's Joshua Snow was fourth (17:46) and Groton's Zachary King was fifth (18:17).
