    Local roundup: Waterford softball to play for Section 3 title

    Durham — Milly Walker pitched a one-hitter over 4.2 innings as Waterford's Little League softball team (ages 11-12) defeated Coginchaug 8-0 Saturday to clinch the top seed in Monday's Section 3 championship game.

    Walker struck out nine. Angela Colonis got the final out in the fifth inning with the bases loaded and struck out the side in the bottom of the sixth for a total of four strikeouts. Amy Pinch had two hits and three runs scored, Bella Williams two hits, including a double, and Colonis and Tori Kiefer each had two hits.

    Waterford (2-0) will play either Coginchaug or East Hartford for the section title.

    Tigers take fifth straight

    • The Connecticut Tigers scored two runs in the first inning and went on to win a rain-shortened game against the Lowell Spinners 9-2 Saturday night in the New York-Penn League, the fifth straight victory for the Tigers. The game was called due to rain in the bottom of the sixth inning.

    Alfred Gutierrez got his first win of the season for the Tigers (15-7), which got four hits in the first inning off Lowell starter Darwinzun Hernandez, including RBI singles by Josh Lester and Tanner Donnels (2-for-4, 3 RBI). Making his Connecticut debut, Daniel Pinero added a sacrifice fly in the second.

    The Tigers scored two runs in the sixth off Boston Red Sox right-hander Joe Kelly, who is on a rehab assignment. Lester and Sam Machonis each recorded RBI singles against Kelly.

    Connecticut goes for its second consecutive series sweep, meeting Lowell at 5:05 p.m. Sunday.

    Zone 6 American Legion

    • New London swept a doubleheader from Waterford, 1-0 and 7-2, to move into second place. Hunter Nadeau pitched a one-hitter in the opener for New London (17-6) and Cooper Robinson drove in the lone run with a double. New London scored six runs in the third inning of the second game as Trevor Bolduc was the winning pitcher and Justin Marceau, Pieter Khoury and Gabriel Cortorreal had two hits apiece. Waterford is 16-6.

    • Ledyard/Pawcatuck swept a doubleheader from Moosup, 4-3 and 6-2. John Moody had three RBI in the opener for L/P (7-15) and stole home in the bottom of the sixth to break a 3-3 tie. Alden Schuman allowed just three hits over 5.1 innings and Anthony Viteritto earned the win in relief. In the second game, Connor McCrea pitched six strong innings to earn the win and Viteritto picked up the save.

    • Norwich split a doubleheader with Danielson, winning the opener 5-2 before dropping the second game 7-4. Josh Gurnack went 2-for-3 with two RBI in the opener for Norwich (6-11-2) while Colby Jakan added two hits and Royce Gendron drove in two runs.

    Connecticut Babe Ruth (13)

    • Brandon Buda had the game-winning hit for Trumbull, which scored two runs with two outs in bottom of the seventh to top Waterford 3-2. Jared Burrows pitched a complete-game, three-hitter for Waterford, allowing no earned runs. Ben Jerome had two hits for Waterford, including the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh. Luke Sokolski added a double and Mike Marelli and Sam Lanuza each scored a run.

    District 10 baseball (11-12)

    • Waterford advanced to the best-of-three chammpionship series with a 7-1 victory over Montville on Friday night. Logan Avin had two hits, including a double, for Waterford and Gavin Hernandez had a three-run home run. Cameron DeCecco had a single and a double for Montville. Waterford will play Mystic for in the championship series beginning Tuesday.

    District 10 baseball (10-11)

    • Mystic beat Waterford 11-10 in 11 innings in game two of the championship series, tying the series at one-apiece. Ethan Mireault, Jose Rodriguez, Aidan Whitten and Luke Noreika combined for the win for Mystic, which also got four hits from Dillon Meyer, including two doubles. Witten had three hits and two RBI, Noreika had two doubles and two RBI, Gabe Morton, Mireault and Mikey Wagner two hits each and Joey Basso had the game-winning RBI.  Jackson Long (two home runs, four RBI) and Jabez White each had four hits for Waterford. The deciding game will take place at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at East Lyme.

    District 10 baseball (9-10)

    • Sidhaarth Bulusu pitched a one-hitter over four innings to lift Mystic to an 8-3 victory over Pawcatuck in the semfinals. Jackson LaLima hit a three-run home run and Donte Valentine had three RBI for Mystic, which advanced to the finals. Noah Christina went 1-for-2 with two RBI for Pawcatuck.

    District 10 softball (9-10)

    • Salem/Bozrah defeated Pawcatuck 14-4 behind pitcher Leah Manke, who struck out nine over five innings. Manke also had two singles and a double, scoring three runs, while Skylar Bell contributed with a double and two singles, one run and two RBI. Carissa Church had two singles, a run and an RBI while Katelyn Pierce scored two runs for Pawcatuck.

    • Sam San Juan went 3-for-3 with a double and two singles to lead Waterford to a 5-2 win over Montville. Anna Dziecinny struck out 14 and went 2-for-3 for Waterford. Alanis Michon struck out 10 for Montville and Jaisey Galvin, Lily Belardo and Erica Velazquez each had a hit.

    • Sydney Lyon had four hits, including a home run and a triple, as Groton/Mystic defeated Lyme 20-0. Katie Tuohy was the winning pitcher, striking out nine and allowing no hits through four innings. Charlotte Cabral and Abriel Carey contributed two hits each and Dre'Ana Singleton added a triple for Groton/Mystic.
