    Local college notes: Martucci and Quinnipiac play Saturday in NCAA tournament

    Around the region

    • Waterford's Adily Martucci is headed to the NCAA tournament as a member of the Quinnipiac women's basketball team. Martucci, a red-shirt senior guard and team leading scorer at 10.6 points per game, earned tournament MVP honors while leading the Bobcats (27-6) to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference title. Quinnipiac, the No. 12 seed, plays No. 5 Marquette Saturday in Coral Gables, Fla.

    • Former Ledyard all-state basketball player DeAnte Bruton led Nichols College to the program's first NCAA Division III tournament victory in its first appearance. Bruton turned in a terrific performance in a 96-93 first round upset of No. 11 Neumann University, finishing with a game-high 28 points on 10-for-21 from the field and 6-for-6 from the foul line. He also had six rebounds and four assists in 39 minutes.

    A freshman guard, Bruton saw his season come to an end with a 111-75 loss to Endicott College in the second round. He had 13 points.

    • Southern Connecticut State University senior Shatajah Wattely of Uncasville earned All-America honors in the 400 meters and as a member of the 4x400 relay team after placing sixth (54.73 seconds) and eighth, respectively, at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships last week. She has achieved All-American honors 16 times in her career.

    • Jackson Donahue's season ended last week with Penn's 72-64 overtime loss to Princeton in the Ivy League tournament semifinals. A sophomore from Pawcatuck, Donahue had two points in 17 minutes. His highlight shot came against Harvard on March 4, as Donahue buried a game-winning 3-pointer with 6.3 seconds left. It was his only field goal attempt of the game.

    • Utica College's Matt Patton, a former Eastern Connecticut Conference diving champion from Waterford, was named the Empire 8 Diver of the Meet late last month after winning the 1 meter competition with 351.50 points and taking second in the 3 meter with a school record 322.45. For his efforts, he earned his first Empire 8 Conference diver of the week.

    • Ledyard graduate Chloe Hespeler was recently selected as the USA South softball rookie of the week. A freshman pitcher for Methodist University, earned her first two wins of her career, going a combined 11 innings and posting a 0.64 earned run average.

    • Groton's Abigail McAdams of the Worcester Polytechnic Institute set an indoor personal best of 16 feet, one inch, in the long jump at the Tufts Final Qualifier. She also recently earned All-Region honors in the pentathlon.

    • The Little East Conference selected Eastern Connecticut State University senior Paige Schneider of East Lyme as its women's lacrosse offensive player of the week. She scored a game-high six goals in an 18-7 rout of Gordon College.

    • Bowdoin College sophomore Mitch Ryan of East Lyme qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships for the second straight year by finishing sixth in the 3-meter dive at the regionals. He earned All-NESCAC honors in the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events, placing second in both.

    • Norwich Free Academy graduate Joe Paparelli is in his senior season as a member of the Bryant University baseball team. He's appeared in eight games and driven in two runs in 13 at-bats.

    • Central Connecticut State University outfielder Buddy Dewaine's college career is off to a good start. He's batting .260 and ranks second on the team in RBI with 10 through 13 games. He's one of three former Montville players on the roster, joining fellow freshmen TT Bowens and Jeremy Sagun. Former Avery Point pitcher Andrew Hinckley is 2-1 with a 3.00 earned run average.

    Tracking the Bears

    • Coast Guard Academy athletes cleaned up in the weekly New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference awards.

    Sophomore Mackenzie Everett received NEWMAC's softball pitcher of the week honors. She  went 3-1 with a 0.78 earned run average and allowed 11 hits and striking out seven last week. Freshman teammate Courtney McKenna was named the sport's athlete of the week after batting .607 with 14 RBI and 11 runs scored in eight games for the Bears, who are off to their best start (8-2) since 2011.

    In women's lacrosse, freshman Abigail Bradford was the offensive athlete of the week. Bradford had three goals, one assist, four ground balls, two draw controls and forced on turnover in an 11-10 win over Virginia Wesleyan. She scored the game-winning goal.

    • Sophomores Taylor Rowe and Chasse Sodemann will both be competing in three events apiece in this week's NCAA Swimming and Diving Championship in Shenandoah, Texas. Rowe qualified in the 200 freestyle, 500 freestyle and 1650 freestyle. Sodemann is undefeated this season in the 100 breaststroke, owning the fifth best time in Division III of 54.77 seconds. He set that NEWMAC and school record setting mark while winning the event at the conference championships. He also is competing in the 50 freestyle and 200 breaststroke.

    Mariners riding a wave

    • The New England Collegiate Conference named Mitchell College junior Megan Elphick its softball rookie of the week. Elphick, who's from Waterford, batted .400 with two RBI and two runs scored last week. Her three hits and an RBI led the Mariners (1-4) to an 8-4 decision over Penn State-New Kensington.

    • For the third straight week, a Mariner has received the NECC player of the week for baseball. Junior shortstop Garet Griffin of Plainfield batted a team-best .438 with two doubles, a triple, a home run and six RBI in five games for the Mariners (6-4).

    • Senior attack McCarthy Brodaski of East Lyme leads the men's lacrosse team in points (12) and goals (nine) through two games. He also has three assists.

    Camel highlights

    • Connecticut College senior Zuri Pavlin recently appeared in Sports Illustrated Magazine's Faces in the Crowd for setting the career rebounding record for the men's basketball program. He finished his career with 917 rebounds and also had 1,051 points.

    • Sophomore attackman P.J. Kelleher was honored as the New England Small College Athletic Conference's men's lacrosse co-player of the week. Kelleher had a school-record 13 points in a 25-12 win over MIT. His eight goals tied a program record. He also had three goals and an assist in a 12-6 win over Roger Williams last week.
