    Local roundup: Hot-shooting Smith beats Coast Guard women

    Northampton, Mass. — Smith College made 10 3-pointers while shooting 52.5 percent from the floor en route to an 81-51 victory over Coast Guard Academy in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference women's basketball game on Wednesday night.

    Kennedy Guest-Prichett led the Pioneers (6-2, 2-1) with 17 points and eight rebounds.

    Junior Micaela Martinelli led the Bears (3-4, 1-2) with a season-high 19 points, her sixth time reaching double figures in seven games. Senior Jill Bray, who was 3 for 3 from behind the arc, added 12 points while sophomore Breanna Wood had five rebounds.

    Smith led 42-30 at halftime, but broke the game open with a 9-1 spurt midway through the third quarter to open a 58-36 lead.

    In other games:

    • Jancy Sherwood scored 24 points as Western Connecticut State University rolled to a 106-63 non-conference win over Mitchell College in Danbury. The Colonials (4-2) made 17 3-pointers and forced the Mariners into 38 turnovers. Ashley Beauford led Mitchell (1-5) with 14 points while Haley Garcia added 13 points and Ariana Carter had 11.

    Boys' basketball

    • MacDuffie jumped out to a 33-12 halftime lead and cruised to a 65-28 win over Williams School. Zain Alan led the Bluies with 10 points while Quinn Furgueson added nine, including a 3-pointer.

    Girls' basketball

    • Williams came up with 18 steals en route to a 39-19 victory over Rocky Hill (R.I.) in a SENE game. Marie Grillo led the Blues with 13 points and Olivia Kaplan added 12. Williams broke the game open in the second half by limiting Rocky Hill to just nine points.
