    Police arrest two men for alleged copper theft

    Norwich - Police arrested two men this morning for allegedly taking what is estimated to be thousands of dollars' worth of copper piping and causing more than $1,500 in damage to a local home. Police said at 10:30 a.m., officers responded to a report from a neighbor of suspicious activity at a vacant home at 527 New London Turnpike. When they arrived, police found a pick-up truck parked in the driveway still running. After investigating, a suspect was located and detained in the rear of the home, trying to exit through a basement bulkhead door carrying copper piping. A second suspect was found inside the home, allegedly tearing copper piping from the ceiling in the basement.

A second suspect was found inside the home, allegedly tearing copper piping from the ceiling in the basement. Police estimate that the amount of damage caused to the home is more than $1,500. A large quantity of copper piping, with an estimated value of more than $2,000, was located and recovered from the rear of a suspect's pick-up truck. The pick-up truck also was seized by police and impounded at an undisclosed location.

    Jesse Mondor, 27, of 495 Laurel Hill Ave., Apt. D-2, and Travis Stimson, 35, of 9 Haven Ave., Willimantic, were charged with third-degree burglary, third-degree larceny and first-degree criminal mischief.

    Both are being held on $50,000 bond and are scheduled to appear at Norwich Superior Court on Thursday, Feb. 25.
