Police: Griswold man threatened people with machete

Griswold - A local man was arrested early Friday morning after he barricaded himself in his home Thursday night and held police at bay for several hours.

Robert Clifford, 55, of 8 Fairview Ave., was charged with three counts of criminal attempt to commit third-degree assault, three counts of first-degree reckless endangerment, three counts of threatening, breach of peace, disorderly conduct and interfering with an officer.

State police said at 9 p.m. Thursday they responded to a domestic disturbance at 8 Fairview Ave. A caller said that Clifford was chasing people with a machete and that there was also a gun involved.

When troopers arrived at the scene, they found several people who said Clifford was highly intoxicated and threatened to harm them with a machete and a gun.

Police set up a perimeter outside the residence and made contact with Clifford by phone. They also evacuated nearby homes.

Police said Clifford threatened police and said he would burn down his house. He refused to surrender to police. No one else was in the home.

At that point, the Griswold fire department and ambulance were called to the scene.

The state police tactical unit and a state police negotiator also responded to the scene.

After repeated attempts to get him to surrender, Clifford turned himself in without incident at 5:15 a.m.

He was taken to The William W. Backus Hospital for evaluation due to his level of intoxication and medication abuse, police said.

When he was released from the hospital, he was taken to Troop E in Montville, where he was arrested.

Clifford is being held on a $100,000 bond pending his arraignment Monday in Norwich Superior Court.
