    Ex-NL man charged with rape

New London - Police charged a former New London man taken into custody in North Carolina in May with rape and other crimes Friday.

Maurice Hill, 33, of Raleigh, N.C., was charged with being a fugitive from justice and held in North Carolina until he could be returned to the city.

New London police obtained an extraditable arrest warrant for Hill at the conclusion of a criminal investigation that began last year. On Friday at New Haven Federal Court, they charged him with first-degree sexual assault, criminal attempt to commit fourth-degree sexual assault and two counts of risk of injury or impairing the morals of a minor, in addition to failure to respond to an infraction and second-degree failure to appear in court.

Hill's most recent address in New London was at 244 Ledyard St.

Police believed that Hill, who has been arrested several times previously, mostly on motor vehicle charges, knew of the warrant for his arrest and fled to North Carolina.

Hill's arrest in North Carolina was the result of cooperation between the New London Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Service in both Connecticut and North Carolina.
