New London bar fight results in two arrests

New London -Two off-duty employees of the Exchange Cafe were charged with assault early Wednesday morning after allegedly beating two people at the 74 Bank St. establishment.

Deputy Police Chief Marshall Seger said the two men can be seen on video kicking and punching their victims.

Police went to the bar at about 12:14 a.m., responding to a report of an assault. When officers arrived, they found a male victim outside whose head was bleeding, Seger said in a press release. A second victim was found in the bar's restroom. Seger said both men had been severely beaten.

The victims, 28 and 35 years old, whose names were not released, were taken to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital where they were treated for their injuries and released.

Seger said the two suspects in the assaults are employees of the Exchange Cafe but were not working at the time.

Jacob Appleby, 31, of 520 Mohegan Ave., Quaker Hill, and Nicholas Keramidas, 35, of 903 Bank St., second floor, were charged Wednesday with second-degree assault and breach of peace.

Seger said surveillance video of the Exchange Cafe showed Appleby and Keramidas assaulting the men during a large fight.

He said the circumstances that led to the altercation remain unclear and are under investigation. Evidence is still being collected, he said.

The police department filed a complaint with the State Liquor Commission for liquor law violations resulting from this incident, Seger said. He said it is the ninth referral made about the bar this year for various violations of the Liquor Control Act.
