New London police identify Mountain Avenue shooting victim

A New London police officer investigates the scene of a reported shooting on Mountain Avenue Saturday night.

New London — City police have identified the victim of Saturday night's shooting on Mountain Avenue as 26-year-old Tornando Robinson of 47 Rodgers St., Apt. 2, and said this morning that they are continuing to investigate with assistance from the state police Eastern District Major Crime Squad.

According to a press release, the police received multiple 911 reports of a shooting victim in the area of 46 Mountain Ave. at about 9:42 p.m. Saturday night. They quickly located Robinson, who was conscious and alert and appeared to have been shot in the lower extremities.

He was taken initially to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital, and later airlifted to Yale-New Haven Hospital for surgery. A Yale spokeswoman could not provide an update on his condition this morning and said hospital records did not contain a patient by his name.

A witness who lives on Mountain Avenue said Saturday night that she saw the victim limping down the street. A woman with him was calling for someone to phone 9-1-1.

"He was holding up his right leg," Michelle Allen said. She said she had just returned home from an event at Ocean Beach Park in honor of former New London Police Capt. William Dittman. She said she went into her house to change her clothes and then heard multiple gunshots.

At around 10 p.m., Police were blocking off the street beginning at around 53 Mountain Ave. Police tagged as evidence a black Acura belonging to Lermaine Carter, who lives at 54 Mountain Ave. The Acura had a shattered driver's side rear window.

Lermaine Carter and his father, Willie Carter, were standing outside their residence Saturday night. Willie Carter said he and his granddaughter were in their apartment when he heard multiple gunshots, and made sure to get his granddaughter to lie down on the floor.

Willie Carter said he "saw the guy lying on the ground." He said the victim was conscious, and "he was just saying 'help me, help me.'"

Bloodstains on the street stretched from around 54 Mountain Ave. to around 64 Mountain Ave.

The police are asking anyone with information to call the detective division at 860-447-1481.
