Two Montville police officers receive service awards

Two members of the Montville Police Department received "outstanding service awards" Friday during a ceremony at the state police training academy in Meriden.

Sgt. Ernest Greenwood and Officer Robert Sundman were given the award for successfully performing "an extreme, complex or difficult investigation" during a June 18 arrest.

That day, Greenwood and Sundman spotted a vehicle that belonged to a suspect of a series of larcenies. When they tried to stop the vehicle, it sped up and turned into a dead-end road, where Greenwood boxed in the vehicle. The suspect rammed the sergeant's cruiser and fled on foot into a wooded area, where Sundman apprehended the suspect.

The suspect ultimately confessed to committing larcenies in Montville, New London and Waterford.

Twice a year, state police honors troopers who demonstrate bravery and outstanding service in the line of duty. The ceremony also honors local and federal law-enforcement personnel, first responders and civilians. Award winners received medals and certificates from Commissioner Reuben F. Bradford and state police Col. Danny R. Stebbins.
