Stonington – Police are investigating after a middle school student was approached by a man in a blue minivan and asked an "identity" question.

Capt. Jerry Desmond said the child, who had just gotten off the bus on Route 184 in Old Mystic around 3:30 p.m., became concerned and reported the incident to his parents.

"We're trying to find out what the story is," Desmond said. "We're trying to get to the bottom of this and speak to the person (in the van) and alleviate any concerns."

Desmond said the school system put out a reverse-call to district parent's phones to make parents aware of what had happened because elementary school students were leaving school at the time.

Desmond said he's hopeful the incident was a misunderstanding but said the department will continue to investigate.
