Two recent Norwich fires ruled accidental

Norwich – Two Aug. 19 fires that damaged apartments in two downtown buildings and injured one tenant were accidental, fire officials said.

City Manager Alan Bergren, in his report to the City Council Tuesday, said fire officials concluded that the fire at 6-D Church St. was caused by a neglected pot on the stove containing hot oil. The oil ignited and one woman in the apartment sustained burns and was hospitalized.

A half hour later that night, a three-alarm fire at 249 Broadway displaced nine tenants in four apartments. Fire officials said that fire started with the "improper discarding of smoking materials" on the second floor platform of the rear exit stairs, just outside Apartment 4.
