Medical examiner rules Norwich man's death a homicide

John Coddington’s death last week was ruled a homicide from a stab wound to the neck, the state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner said Monday.

Coddington, 27, died the morning of Sept. 4 after an altercation in Jewett City. Witnesses said Coddington, of Norwich, was stabbed behind 231 North Main St. before he ran, bleeding and calling for help, to the nearby Bestway gas station and convenience store around 11:44 a.m. He was pronounced dead a short time later at The William W. Backus Hospital.

His brother, Jeffrey Savoy, 22, was arrested later in the day later and is held in custody in lieu of a $1 million bond. Savoy is charged with first-degree manslaughter, assault on a police officer and interfering with an officer.

Savoy’s next court date is Sept. 24 in New London Superior Court, when he is expected to be appointed a public defender.
